Parent Governor Election Announcement

19th October 2022

Parent Governor Election

I am pleased to announce that Dr Ash Basu and Mrs Lesley Else have been elected unopposed as new Parent Governor representatives on our Governing Body, with effect from 14th October 2022.  Below is a copy of each candidate statement.

Mrs Sue Anderson
Chair of Governors

Candidate Statement – Dr A Basu

I am a Consultant Emergency Physician at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, father of a daughter who attends Bishop Heber and have a keen interest in medical education, as well as a responsibility for medical education for undergraduate medical students, and postgraduate doctors.

Furthermore, I have also been involved in supporting sixth formers in work experience within the hospital, and most recently have helped support the Seren programme, designed to widen access to Medicine for those who, for whatever reason, hadn’t previously considered it to be a career option for them. Given the wide-ranging careers that the NHS can provide, I would be happy and willing to be a conduit for any Heber students considering or wishing to embark on a career in our health service.

I am acutely mindful of the challenges that this post-pandemic world has brought, particularly with the need to catch up on any deficiencies that have resulted either educationally or developmentally, as well as the mental health burden on everyone; especially children. My experience and training in level 3 children’s safeguarding through my NHS work affords me an excellent awareness of the occasional, yet serious issues that teachers and schools may face, not to mention the various healthcare needs that children may be experiencing either acutely, or as on-going conditions.

Finally, having experience of being a governor at my son’s primary school, I am conversant with the necessary roles and responsibilities of this position and in providing a critical eye and supportive advisor for the school community.
Candidate Statement – Mrs L Else
Since my daughter started at Bishop Heber three years ago, I have been particularly impressed with both the level of care and standard of education she has received. I am extremely keen to give something back to the school, who have given so much to my child, hence my application to be parent governor.

I myself am passionate about education and have worked within the profession for over twenty five years. Previously I was a class teacher and then senior leader in primary schools of varying sizes and demographics. I am currently a school improvement advisor for over forty schools within Cheshire, Wirral and Bolton, and was an Ofsted inspector for ten years, only recently relinquishing the role in order to spend more time supporting schools rather than judging them.

I was previously vice chair of governors at my daughter’s primary school and held this post for eight years and am therefore aware of the strategic functions involved. I miss this role and am therefore very keen to play an active part on Heber’s governing body.

I feel that my professional skills, combined with my passion for making a difference to the lives of children and young adults, would make me a suitable choice for the role of parent governor at Heber.
